Here you'll find practical advice on choosing the right treatment for your trip, the stories behind traditional Balinese techniques, and tips for getting the most relaxing experience out of your time in Bali. Whether you're planning your first in-villa massage or you're a regular guest looking for something new, our blog is here to help you make the most of every moment of calm.
Uluwatu sits at Bali's southernmost tip — dramatic limestone cliffs dropping straight into the Indian Ocean, world-class reef breaks churning below, and one of the island's most sacred sea temples perched right at the edge. It's a place that earns its reputation daily: the surf here is genuinely exceptional, the scenery is among Bali's most cinematic, and the Kecak fire dance at sunset is one of those experiences that stays with you long after the flight home.
What a full Uluwatu day also delivers — and what most tourists don't fully expect — is how physically demanding it is. Steep cliff stairs, long paddle-outs, hours of walking on uneven terrain, and a day in the Bali sun add up in ways that show clearly by the time the last Kecak drum fades at sunset. An in-villa massage from Putu Bali Spa Home Care is the most practical way to recover without adding another cliffside road to the end of the day.

Uluwatu occupies the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula — Bali's limestone plateau that juts south from the main island. The landscape here is distinct from the rest of Bali: dry, dramatic, and cliffed, with the ocean visible from almost everywhere. The main surf breaks and the temple are on the western side, while the cliffside villa and restaurant strip runs along the southern and eastern edges.
Roads wind along the cliff tops, and most accommodation is set back from the edge in private villas with ocean views. Getting between spots generally requires a scooter or a driver — Uluwatu is spread out in a way that makes walking between venues impractical.
For massage coverage specific to the area, see our Uluwatu massage page.
1. Surf Uluwatu, Padang Padang, or Bingin
The Bukit's three main breaks each have their own character, and all three are considered among the best waves in Bali.
Uluwatu — a long, hollow left-hander that wraps around the cliff and offers multiple sections from the Cave to the Racetrack. Reached by steep concrete stairs down through the cliff face, it's one of Bali's most famous and most demanding surf experiences.
Padang Padang — a short, powerful barrel that produces the kind of wave tourists come from across the world for. More selective than Uluwatu, and unforgiving on the wrong day.
Bingin — a more accessible reef break on a beautiful, sheltered beach, popular with intermediate surfers who want quality waves without the intensity of the other two. The stairs down to Bingin are steep and numerous — count on feeling them in the legs on the return climb.
A full morning at any of these breaks means serious paddle work, repeated wipeouts, and the kind of shoulder, arm, and lower back fatigue that a standard rest won't fully address.
Tip: All three breaks are reef breaks. Booties are recommended for reef protection. Check tide and swell reports before heading out — Uluwatu and Padang Padang are significantly more dangerous on wrong-size swells.
2. Uluwatu Temple Cliff Walk
Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's six key directional temples, perched on the edge of a 70-metre cliff above the ocean. The temple complex itself is partially open to tourists, and the walking path around the cliff edge offers some of the most dramatic ocean views in Bali.
The path is also home to Uluwatu's famous macaque monkeys — bold, opportunistic, and notorious for grabbing sunglasses, phones, and snacks from tourists who aren't paying attention. Keep valuables secured and follow the temple staff's guidance.
The cliff walk takes about 45 minutes at a comfortable pace. The terrain is uneven in places, and the steps between levels add meaningful leg work on top of whatever the morning's surfing already contributed.
Tip: Wear a sarong to enter the temple — they're available to borrow or rent at the entrance. Entrance fee applies for non-Balinese tourists.
3. Kecak Fire Dance at Sunset — Uluwatu Temple or Karang Boma Cliff
Uluwatu Temple hosts one of Bali's most famous Kecak fire dance performances every evening at sunset, staged right on the cliff above the ocean. The chanting, the fire, and the light on the cliffs create a genuinely extraordinary atmosphere — it's busy, booked ahead, and worth it.
Karang Boma Cliff, about a kilometre from the temple, offers a newer and quieter alternative managed by local Balinese. The same Ramayana story, the same fire finale, but with far fewer tourists and a more intimate feel. For customers who've already seen Kecak elsewhere, or who prefer a less crowded experience, Karang Boma is one of Uluwatu's genuine hidden gems.
Either venue: arrive early enough to find a cliffside spot for a cold Bintang as the sky turns orange before the performance begins. It's one of Bali's most complete sunset experiences.
4. Cliffside Beach Club — Uma Beach House or Single Fin
Uma Beach House sits directly on the cliff above Uluwatu's surf break, with an infinity pool facing the ocean and a restaurant serving all-day food. It's one of the more relaxed cliffside clubs on the Bukit — quieter than some of the louder venues further north, and positioned perfectly for watching surfers from above.
Single Fin above Bingin Beach has a different energy — more social, with live music on Sundays and a crowd that tends toward the surf-and-stay contingent rather than the day-trip tourist. Both are worth an afternoon stop between surf and the Kecak performance.
5. Explore the Bukit's Secret Beaches
Beyond the main surf breaks, the Bukit's cliff coastline hides a handful of beaches accessible only by steep paths cut into the rock: Thomas Beach, Padang Padang Beach (during lower tide), and Nyang Nyang Beach — a long, wild, almost-empty stretch requiring a 20-minute downhill hike that makes the return climb one of the more demanding walks on the peninsula.
These beaches are rewards for effort. The hike down and back up adds genuinely to the day's physical load — and to the case for booking a massage by evening.
At Putu Bali Spa Home Care, our Uluwatu customers consistently describe the same physical picture at the end of the day:
Getting back in a vehicle and driving the winding Uluwatu roads to a spa is the last thing most customers want after this day. A therapist who comes to the villa is a far more practical solution.

What is the Kecak fire dance and is it worth seeing? Kecak is a traditional Balinese ritual dance performed by a choir of men without instruments, telling the story of the Ramayana. At Uluwatu Temple it's staged at sunset on the cliff edge — one of Bali's most unmissable cultural experiences.
What is Karang Boma Cliff and how is it different from Uluwatu Temple? Karang Boma is a newer, local-run Kecak performance venue about a kilometre from Uluwatu Temple. The same Ramayana story and fire finale, but with fewer tourists and a more intimate atmosphere. A good alternative for customers who prefer a quieter experience.
How far in advance should I book a massage in Uluwatu? Same-day is usually possible. For evening slots after the Kecak performance, booking 3–4 hours ahead is recommended.
Which surf break in Uluwatu is best for intermediate surfers? Bingin is the most accessible of the three main Bukit breaks for intermediate surfers — a quality reef break on a sheltered beach, less intense than Uluwatu or Padang Padang.
Can couples book a simultaneous massage in Uluwatu? Yes. Our Couple Balinese Massage sends two therapists at the same time for a shared treatment.
Do you bring a massage table to Uluwatu cliff villas? Yes. Portable massage tables are available on request. We bring all equipment including linens and oils.
Is the Uluwatu Temple entrance free? No. There is an entrance fee for non-Balinese tourists. A sarong must also be worn — available to borrow or rent at the entrance gate.
What should customers know before surfing Uluwatu or Padang Padang? Both are reef breaks. Booties are recommended. Always check the tide and swell forecast before paddling out — these breaks are significantly more demanding and more dangerous on wrong-size swells. Uluwatu is not suitable for beginners.
Is a morning or evening massage better after a surf day in Uluwatu? Most of our customers prefer an evening massage after the Kecak performance — it serves as the natural close to the day. Morning massages work well for customers doing a second surf day who want to start loose.
