WHAT IS BALINESE MASSAGE?

Balinese massage is a traditional full-body massage technique that originated in Bali, Indonesia — rooted in thousands of years of Balinese Hindu healing culture. It combines four distinct massage techniques into one continuous, deeply relaxing treatment:

  • Effleurage (long flowing strokes) Long, smooth, rhythmic strokes using the full length of the hands and forearms. These warm the muscles, improve blood circulation, and create the flowing, wave-like sensation that makes Balinese massage so distinctive and immediately recognisable.

  • Petrissage (kneading and rolling) Deeper kneading and rolling movements that work into the muscle tissue beneath the surface. This releases knots, breaks down tension, and prepares the deeper muscles for further work.

  • Acupressure (pressure point stimulation) Firm thumb and finger pressure applied to specific energy points across the body — based on traditional Balinese and Asian healing systems. This stimulates the body's natural energy flow and is one of the most therapeutic elements of the treatment.

  • Skin Rolling A gentle but precise technique where the skin is lifted and rolled between the fingers to release fascial tension, improve elasticity, and stimulate circulation just beneath the surface of the skin.

These four techniques are woven together by a skilled therapist into one seamless, flowing treatment — accompanied throughout by warm, aromatic Balinese oils that nourish the skin and deepen relaxation through the senses.

Benefits of Balinese Massage

Balinese massage is much more than simple relaxation. Regular treatments offer a wide range of physical and mental health benefits — making it one of the most holistic massage styles available anywhere in the world.

Physical benefits:

  • Releases chronic muscle tension and knots throughout the body
  • Improves blood circulation from head to toe
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system to support natural detoxification
  • Reduces inflammation and soreness in overworked muscles
  • Improves skin tone and texture through oil nourishment and rolling techniques
  • Relieves joint stiffness and improves range of motion
  • Reduces headaches and neck tension caused by poor posture or travel fatigue
  • Supports faster recovery after physical activity, surfing, hiking, or yoga

Mental and emotional benefits:

  • Deeply reduces stress hormones including cortisol
  • Promotes the release of serotonin and endorphins — the body's natural feel-good chemicals
  • Improves quality of sleep — particularly valuable after long-haul travel and jet lag
  • Creates a deep state of calm and mental clarity
  • Reduces symptoms of anxiety and mental fatigue
  • Restores a sense of balance and groundedness — the central goal of Balinese healing philosophy

Why In-Villa Balinese Massage Is Better Than a Spa

  • Point 1 — Complete privacy In a spa, you share space with strangers. In your villa, it is entirely yours. No waiting rooms, no background noise from other treatment rooms, no rush to get dressed and leave. Just you, your therapist, and complete privacy from the first moment to the last.

  • Point 2 — No disruption to your relaxation After a Balinese massage, you are in a deep state of calm. The last thing you want to do is put clothes on, navigate a spa corridor, and find a taxi. With in-villa massage, you simply stay exactly where you are — on your sun lounger, in your bed, on your terrace. The relaxation continues uninterrupted.

  • Point 3 — Your space, your comfort You choose the setting. Your villa terrace with the rice field view. Your bedroom with the air conditioning on. Your pool deck at sunset. Our therapist sets up anywhere you are most comfortable and the massage is tailored entirely to your preferences.

  • Point 4 — Available at any hour Spas open at 9am and close at 10pm. We are available 24 hours a day. Need a Balinese massage at midnight after a long travel day? At 6am before a sunrise ceremony? We are always ready — just send us a message.

  • Point 5 — Better value than a spa Bali spa prices vary enormously. Hotel spas charge IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,500,000 for a Balinese massage. Our professional in-villa Balinese massage starts at IDR 200,000 for 60 minutes — authentic, experienced, and privately delivered at a genuinely honest price.

Balinese Massage Pricing | Honest and Transparent

Our Balinese massage pricing is completely fixed and transparent. No hidden fees, no tipping pressure, no surprises. The price you see is the price you pay.

  • 60 Minutes IDR 200,000 per person Perfect for a focused full-body Balinese massage covering all the main muscle groups. Ideal for guests with limited time or as a daily wellness treatment during a longer Bali stay.

  • 90 Minutes IDR 300,000 per person Our most popular duration. The full Balinese massage experience — with more time spent on each area of the body, deeper muscle work, and a more complete relaxation journey from head to toe.

  • Late Night Surcharge (after 22:00) IDR 50,000 additional per booking We are available 24 hours but add a small charge for late-night travel. All other pricing stays exactly as listed.

  • Couples Balinese Massage IDR 400,000 for two (60 min) | IDR 600,000 for two (90 min) Two therapists arrive together — both guests receive their Balinese massage simultaneously. Perfect for couples, friends, or family members who want to share the experience.
What to Expect From Your In-Villa Balinese Massage

If this is your first in-villa massage or your first Balinese massage, here is exactly what happens from the moment you book to the moment your therapist leaves.

  • When you book: Send us a WhatsApp message with your location, your preferred treatment duration, the number of people, and what time suits you. We confirm quickly and give you an estimated arrival time.

  • When your therapist arrives: Our therapist arrives with a professional portable massage table, fresh clean linens, a selection of warm Balinese massage oils, and all equipment needed. They will greet you professionally, ask about any areas of tension or discomfort, and confirm your preferences — firmer or lighter pressure, any areas to avoid, the room temperature, and so on.

  • Setting up: The massage table is set up in your chosen space — your bedroom, your living area, your villa terrace, or wherever you feel most comfortable. The whole setup takes around 5 minutes and leaves no mess whatsoever.

  • During the massage: Your therapist will work through the full body — beginning at the back, moving through the legs, turning you over for the front of the legs, abdomen (if requested), arms, neck, and finishing with the scalp and face. The warm oils are applied throughout and the four Balinese techniques — effleurage, petrissage, acupressure, and skin rolling — are woven seamlessly together.

  • After the massage: Your therapist will finish gently, allow you a few quiet minutes to come back to full awareness, and then quietly pack up and leave — taking everything with them. You are free to stay exactly where you are, rest, sleep, or simply enjoy the calm.

Frequently Asked Questions
| Balinese Massage

Balinese massage uses flowing strokes, kneading, acupressure, and skin rolling with warm oils — it is fluid, soothing, and deeply relaxing throughout. Thai massage uses more intensive stretching and pressure point work without oil, performed on a mat through clothing. Balinese massage is generally gentler and more nurturing — Thai massage is more therapeutic and physically intensive. Both are excellent — it depends on what your body needs most.

Absolutely. Balinese massage is one of the most accessible and universally loved massage styles — gentle enough for first-timers yet deeply therapeutic for experienced massage clients. Our therapists always ask about your pressure preferences before beginning, so the treatment is adjusted perfectly for you.

Balinese massage uses a medium pressure by default — firm enough to release real muscle tension but smooth and flowing enough to feel deeply relaxing throughout. Our therapists always check in about your preference at the start and adjust throughout the session. If you prefer lighter or firmer pressure, just let them know.

Our therapists use warm, high-quality Balinese massage oils — typically a blend of coconut or sesame base oil with traditional Balinese essential oils including frangipani, jasmine, ylang ylang, and sandalwood. If you have a specific oil preference or a skin sensitivity, just let us know when you book and we will accommodate.

We recommend waiting at least 30 minutes to 1 hour after your massage before showering — this allows the oils to continue absorbing into the skin and extends the benefits of the treatment. If you have a shower available at your villa, your therapist can advise the best timing.

Yes — Balinese massage is gentle enough to receive daily and many of our regular guests do exactly that. Daily massage is a wonderful way to fully deepen your relaxation and wellbeing during a Bali stay. Many long-term visitors and expats book us several times a week as a regular wellness routine.

Standard Balinese massage is not recommended during the first trimester. From the second trimester onward, a modified prenatal version can be safe and beneficial — but it must be performed by a therapist trained in pregnancy massage. We offer a dedicated Pregnancy Massage treatment specifically designed for expectant mothers. Please let us know you are pregnant when you book so we can send the right therapist and adapt the treatment accordingly.

Most guests undress to their underwear or fully for a Balinese massage to allow full access to the skin for oil application and skin rolling techniques. Your privacy is always protected with clean linens throughout the treatment. However, you are completely in control — wear whatever level of clothing you are comfortable with and our therapist will adapt accordingly.

The Most Authentic Balinese Massage Experience | In Your Own Private Space

Balinese massage is not just a treatment — it is one of the things that makes Bali, Bali. The flowing strokes, the warm oils, the aromatic scent, the deep release of everything your body has been holding — it is an experience that belongs here, in this island, with a therapist who grew up with this tradition.

Putu Bali Spa Home Care brings that experience to you exactly where you are — no traffic, no shared spaces, no rush. Just authentic Balinese healing in the privacy and comfort of your own space, available any hour, every day.

This is how a Balinese massage should feel. And this is how it should be received.
